Use the keyboard to navigate menus, and the mouse to play.
Gameplay rules and techniques are described in-game, through the Help screens accessible through the Main Menu, and by playing with the "Game Advice" feature which is enabled (or disabled) through the Options menu.

Game settings are stored in settings.ini, which is an editable text file.
By editing this text file manually you can play the game Windowed (beta), and due to limited mouse support this feature did not make it into the final game's standard options. Screen resolution and color depth changes, although technically configurable through the settings.ini file, are STRONGLY NOT advised, as absolutely NO support is provided by the program for alternative resolutions or bit depths.
If the game plays too slowly, even after Water Quality has been turned off in the game Options menu, setting "framerest" lower may help. Likewise, if your brand-new computer is screaming fast, even on Full Water Quality, increasing this number will help slow the program down. All other settings in this file can be accessed more safely through the program's menus. Note that while the High Scores data is kept in this file, the cheatlock values prevent tampering. Any attempt to edit the high scores data manually in the settings.ini file will likely be picked up by the program, and result in automatically clearing the game's scores file back to defaults.

All files included in this package must be kept in the same directory as the executable in order for the program to function. Data files have been kept external for memory reasons.

The rest of the documentation regarding gameplay is in the game itself. Go play SpellCaster already and stop reading the readme file!
